If your key feels stiff or won't turn smoothly, or the shackle feels sticky and hard to open, your lock likely just needs lubricating rather than replacing. Below are the correct lubricants to use, along with the accompanying guide recommended by our engineers. This procedure only needs to be carried out if you notice that the movements are no longer as smooth as they used to be.
My key won't turn, or feels stiff or stuck
This is almost always a lubrication issue, not a fault with the key or the lock. Follow the cylinder maintenance steps below before assuming you need a replacement key or lock.
Cylinder Maintenance
Use a graphite powder lubricant to keep the cylinder working smoothly.
- Apply a small amount of the graphite powder onto the key.
- Insert the key into the lock and turn it 3-5 times to distribute the lubricant.
- Remove the key and wipe off any excess powder.
Shackle Ends & Deadbolt Mechanism
Use a silicone oil (e.g. Lubrisolve).
Shackle ends: apply a small amount of lubricant to where the shackle legs meet the lock body, as these points often collect dirt and moisture. Ensure the lubricant is evenly spread.
Deadbolt:
- Set the lock to the locked position so that the deadbolt is extended.
- Apply the lubricant to the top and bottom of the deadbolt, following the product's lubrication instructions.
- Cycle the lock 8-10 times to work the lubricant into the mechanism.
- Repeat this process 2-3 times for best results.
